Virginia Republicans abandon plan for loyalty oath in March 1 primary
The Republican Party of Virginia has removed the requirement for the party loyalty pledge. A unanimous vote from the party’s State Central Committee ended the requirement.
Many have criticized the oath, including GOP presidential candidate, Donald Trump, saying it deters first-time voters and independents.
“We’re delighted,” said Corey Stewart, chairman of Trump’s Virginia campaign. “It shows that the State Central Committee listened to the Trump campaign and others who were concerned that it was chasing new voters out of the party.” The pledge would have required voters to sign a statement that said: “My signature below indicates that I am a Republican.”.
